Grain Finished -vs- Grass Fed?

We are often asked about the difference between grain finished and grass fed beef. Visually, there is difference in the perimeter and internal fat (the marbling)- while grass fed beef can have just as much fat as a grain finished beef, the fat is yellower in color. The fat in grass fed beef has a higher amount of brain boosting omega 3 fatty acids. Grass-fed beef is one of the most nutrient-dense proteins you can buy and it has an extensive micronutrient profile. For these reasons, grass fed beef is favored by those on a Keto Diet.

The diet of a grass fed animal is just as you would think - grass! - perinninal short grasses found on our ranch. These are primarily gramma grasses, western wheat, big and little blue stem grasses. Grass fed animals are typically a little bit older, 24+ months. Often it takes the additional time for the animal to put on enough weight and fat to grade Choice or above.

Grain finished beef sports a cream white layer of perimeter fat and marbling. These animals were pasture raised like their grass fed companions, but have been fed a diet of corn and other grains for at least 60 days. The flavor of the meat is mild as the animal is a typically younger 15-24 months.

Both are delicious! There are certain health benefits to grass fed beef: additional micronutrients and omega 3 rich fats. Grain finished beef is juicy and mild and is most often served in restaurants including top steak houses.

Whichever Shorgrass Prairie beef you choose, you can be sure that is is 100% natural (no hormones or antibiotics), artisanal, (each beef is processed individually) and raised the old fashioned way!
